JONESPORT - Clarence Berton Reed, age 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 29, 2016, in Belfast, Maine. He was born on February 27, 1930, in Jonesport, Maine, the son of the late Berton Reed and the late Phyllis (Smith) Reed. Clarence attended Washington State Teacher's College. After graduating, he decided to join the U.S. Air Force. He was a radio and radar controller in Korea. After 3 years in the service, Clarence met Gwendolyn A. (Hartford) and decided to continue his education at W.S.T.C. with her. Later on, they married in Harrington. Clarence started his teaching career and taught for 33 years. Gwendolyn was also a wonderful teacher. Clarence coached basketball and baseball. He officiated during basketball games. For many years, he was a driver's ed teacher in Brewer. Obviously, he loved sports, especially teams such as the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and the Bruins. He had a great sense of humor. Other hobbies included hunting, devoting time to his best friend Gwendolyn, and supporting his daughter by attending her softball and basketball games.
Clarence was reunited with his beloved wife, Gwendolyn Reed, of darn near 55 years; both of his parents; sisters- Ruth (Reed) Beal and Isabelle (Reed) Coffin.
Survivors include his pride and joy, daughter, Wendy Reed of Searsport, Maine; sister Doris Pratt and her husband, Skip Pratt; sisters-in-law Calista Goodrich, Lillian Phinney, Mae Wilberding, and June Hartford; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Clarence's memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Jonesboro Union Church with Sharon Church officiating. Committal service will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Jonesport. A celebration of life reception will follow at the church vestry.
