Mathias was the 4th of 7 children of George Yerian and his 2nd wife, Margaret Williams.
He married on December 11, 1806, Columbiana County, Ohio, to Christina Bair.
He is listed as "Matthias Yarrian" in the 1850 census of Unity Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, with his daughter Barbara and her son Ira, and next to his son Peter and family.
Mathias and his brother, Conrad came from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, into Unity Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, in 1803 and settled there for life. They served together in the War of 1812 under their neighbor, Captain Martin Sitler.
