COLUMBIA-- Funeral service for Mr. William "Bill" Emerson Sports Sr., 59, of Columbia, will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2002, in Bayview Baptist Church conducted by the Reverend Jimmy Davis. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Northeast. The closed casket will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service. Visitation will be from 5-7 tonight at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Sports died Sunday, January 13, 2002, in Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born in Marlboro County, he was a son of Josephine Sports Sweatt and the late Grady Sports, Sr. Mr. Sports was a member of Bayview Baptist Church; he was a self-employed contractor that dealt in the vinyl siding industry for 20 years. Mr. Sports enjoyed woodworking, fishing and the outdoors. He was known as a "joker" to family and friends.

Survivors are his wife of 33 years, Connie Lee Sports of the home; his mother and step-father, Josephine S. and Wallie Sweatt of Latta; daughters, Peggy Sports of Elgin, SC, and Sherri Alti and her husband, Todd of Columbia; grandchildren, Jessica Sports, Rebecca Sports, Troy Sports and Chase Alti; brothers, Grady Sports, Jr. and Randy Sports; sisters, Shirley Herring, Betty Clark, Frances Jones, Barbara Bryant and Linda Bullard.
