Funeral Rites Will Be Today

Aged Gastonia Resident Succumbs at Home of Daughter
After 2-week Illness

Gastonia, Feb. 17 --John Hope Adams, 87, last of his family, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.M. Van Sleen, this morning after an illness of two weeks during which time he had been confined to his bed. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at the home with interment to follow in the family plot in Oakwood by the side of his wife, who died in September 1918.

Mr. Adams was a man of unusual stamina and strength for one of his age. Up until a few weeks ago, he had been able to come uptown every day, walking every step of the way. For the last 16 years he had a room at Mrs. H.R. Thompson's, but had been at Mrs. Van Sleen's for the past several weeks.

Mr. Adams was born in Bethel, York County, S.C., the son of the late Dr. William Ewart and Margaret Hayes Adams, pioneer Scotch-Irish settlers of that section. His father was one of the few physicians in the country at that time. He was the last of the immediate family. Two sisters, Misses Lizzie and Emily Adams; two brothers, Joseph H Adams and Dr. Charles E. Adams have preceded him to the grave. Three sons, Walter Edward, Robert Webb, and William Ewart also preceded him in death. One daughter, Mrs. H.M. Van Sleen, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren survive.

Mr. Adams moved to Gastonia in 1899 after having disposed of his farm in York county. He was for a number of years in the grocery business here. He retired from active business some years ago.

He was a life long member of the Presbyterian church first at Bethel in York county and later a member of the First Presbyterian church here.
