Anna "Jane" Hill Smith, 92, of Boise, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 with family at her side. Jane was born in Boise on Feb. 23, 1914 to Dr. John Carl Hill and his wife, Elizabeth. Dr. Hill, a prominent physician at St. Luke's Hospital, delivered his firstborn child. Jane was one of four daughters. She was educated at Boise schools through her graduation from Boise High School in 1930 at the age of 16. After her father's death in 1930, Jane, her mother and sisters eventually all moved to Santa Monica, Calif. While in Southern California, she briefly attended UCLA. In addition, Jane attended business school. Jane used her business training to start a career as a stenographer. She began working in Hollywood in the movie industry. She assisted producer Walter Wanger at United Artists Studio in 1936-37 and Walt Disney from 1937-40. The highlight was working on the film Fantasia at the Disney studio. From 1940-42, Jane worked at Western Airlines in Los Angeles. As luck would have it, she met her future husband, Burck H. Smith, while riding in an elevator on her way home after work. Burck was employed at rival, American Airlines, located in the same building. Burck and Jane were married on May 16,1942 in Yuma, Arizona. Jane was the mother of three children. She gave birth to twins, Gail and Reid in 1945. Suzanne Carla was born in 1952. The entire Smith family and extended members lived in the Los Angeles area until 1992. In 1992, Jane and Burck moved to Boise after purchasing the Hill family home on Warm Springs Avenue where Jane spent her childhood. She was so thrilled to be home again. Jane loved to go for walks down "The Avenue" with her daughter, Carla. While Jane had many great times traveling during her life to places all around the world, she was happiest in Boise. She enjoyed playing bridge with long time friends. In later years, Jane played bridge on her computer. She was a voracious reader. Jane always had the latest novel by her favorite chair near the window. Shortly before her death, she was able to watch a beautiful snowfall from her window. Small joys meant so much. Jane will be missed most for her strong love of family and friends, and her dry sense of humor. Mother, may your Keoke coffee always have plenty of whipped cream. You will be forever in our hearts. We will all be together again in the blink of an eye. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Burck and sisters, Elizabeth Whiffen and Cordelia Wade. She is survived by her sister, Suzanne Hill of Boise, children, Reid Smith of Northridge, Calif., Gail Smith Agalsoff of Auburn, Calif. and Carla Smith of Boise and Jane's grandchildren, Laurel Smith Priesz, and Ryan Smith of California, and Andrew and Steve Agalsoff of Idaho. A private service will be conducted by the Very Rev. Richard Demarest of St. Michael's Cathedral at Morris Hill Cemetery. Cremation arrangements will be under the direction of Gibson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Luke's Hospice, or the charity of your choice. "Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush of birds in circling flight. I am in the star shine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room, I am the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I did not die." By Mary Elizabeth Frye Many thanks to St.Luke's Hospice. They allowed Jane to leave this world with comfort and dignity. We will be eternally grateful for your support.
