Horace Allard Eakins, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and of Watha, died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Huntington Health Care. He was 87.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy and was a rural mail carrier for 30 years. Not only was Mr. Eakins a beloved husband and wonderful daddy, granddaddy and uncle, he was a generous friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed God’s nature and the outdoors, whether it was farming, gardening, hunting or playing golf. His memory will endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
He was born Dec. 25, 1926, in Pender County to Jackson and Idella Mae Herring Eakins. In addition to his parents, Mr. Eakins was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Hearn Eakins; daughter, Mary Ann Eakins; sisters, Huelva E. Parker and Hazel E. Houze; and brothers, Festus, C.P. and Rhodes Eakins

Horace Allard is survived by his daughters, Pamela E(Mike), of Watha and Peggy E.(Sean), of Newtown, Conn.; son, Grant of Watha; grandchildren, Eric(Megan), Carrie Beth (Mitchell), Erin, Brendan, Hunter and Julie; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be held at noon Saturday, Feb.15, 2014 at Shiloh Baptist Church with funeral services beginning at 1 pm The Rev. Gardner Eakins will conduct the service. Burial will follow at Herring Family Cemetery.
The family would like to express their thanks for the care, love, compassion and support given to Mr. Eakins and his family by the staff of Huntington Health Care during his journey to join his beloved Ruth who died just three weeks ago.
Memorial gifts may be given to Shiloh Baptist Church, 19685 US Hwy 421, Watha, NC 28478.
