Mr. Brotherton, age 82, of Charlotte, died April 18, 2005 at Presbyterian Hospital. Retired, he formerly was a weaver and loom-fixer at Leaksville Woolen Mills, then later owned and operated several convenience stores in Lincoln and Mecklenburg counties.
Mr. Brotherton served as a Sgt. 1st Class in the US Army during World War II, with the 70th Tank Battalion Company C. He fought in Africa and Sicily and landed on Utah Beach as part of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. His company participated in the liberation of France, as well as battles in Belgium and Bastogne. He fought in the Battle of Huertgen Forest, Battle of the Bulge and fought across the Sigfried Line. The war ended on May 8, 1945 his 23rd birthday.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday April 21 at Forest Lawn Cemetery West, Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Raymer Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Michael Williams, Terry Brotherton, Clifford Shaw, Barry Brotherton, Jimmy Harkey and Red Brotherton.
Son of the late Charles Albertus and Gertrude Prim Brotherton of Triangle N.C. this loving husband, father, and grandfather is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Cathryn Barnette Brotherton; daughters, Linda B. Williams of Cary NC and June M. Brotherton of Apex, NC; grandchildren, Michael L. Williams Jr. of Verona, WI and Kelly Anne Williams of Goldsboro, NC.
