Historical Note Regarding Her Mother

According to the 2001 Oklahoma Commission study and report on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, Joan's mother, Mary Eva Uhrig Korte, was one of just a handful of white heroes of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. While working as a maid for a wealthy farm family east of the city, she hid a number of black victims fleeing the massacre on their farm. Shamefully, out of the 72,000 residents of Tulsa in 1921, there were only four white people or families (including Mary), and one Hispanic lady, who hid and sheltered the terrified men, women and children fleeing the white terrorists. Mary was a very special, empathetic human being and should never be forgotten.
