Nelse Laverne Lunstrum

Bothell, WA

Nelse Laverne Lunstrum, 84, passed away October 8, 2016, at North Creek Senior
Living Center in Bothell, WA. He died from kidney failure. Dad was born
September 12, 1932, in Ellensburg, WA, to Paul N. and Cora J. Lunstrum. He
grew up in Ellensburg and worked at the family store, Lunstrum Home Grocery.
He attended Central Washington College, where he was a member of the track
team. He then moved to the University of Washington, graduating with a degree
in general dentistry. His summers during dental school in Seattle were spent
on a salmon trawler, fishing for kings and silvers in the waters off of Point
Roberts. Following graduation, Dad practiced dentistry in Seattle, WA. He met
and married a young widow, Dolores (Barger) McAbee, and quickly adopted her
two little girls. He enlisted in the military, and was stationed in Ulm,
Germany, where he spent four years as a dentist and a captain in the Army. He
received an honorable discharge from the Army, and returned to Washington to
set up his own dental practice in Lakewood.

He and Dolores had two more daughters together. Dad had many hobbies. He built
and flew remote controlled airplanes - he built those in the living room of
our small military apartment in Germany. He bought a Honda 350 motorcycle, and
spent many weekends motorcycle touring and solo camping around the backroads
of the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. He was an avid reader. He loved
working with wood, building fine furniture and cabinets. His favorite hobby
was building and racing motorboats. He raced with the Whidby Island Rooster
Tails, and the Seattle Outboard Association. For many years his runabouts were
sequential ‘works in progress’ in our garage. In time, he included his
grandsons, Sean and Colin Walker. According to Sean, “Grandpa raced ‘A-Stock
Runabout’. He built MANY boats for this class. They all had numbers. 79-R was
his racing number so he numbered the boats, 79-R1, 79-R2 etc. His favorite was
79-R5, a HUGE comfy, sofa of a boat. It wasn’t fast, but he didn’t care about
winning. He just wanted to have fun with his grandkids and the many friends he
made in the club.”

Nelse is survived by four daughters: Suzanne Walker Carr (Glenn), East
Wenatchee, Sheryl McDevitt (Mick), Leavenworth, Sandra Lunstrum, Mountlake
Terrace, and Stacy Powell (Todd) Duvall; brother, Dick Lunstrum of Ellensburg;
as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Dolores, in 2006; and two sisters, Pauline Atterbury and
Grace Urfer.
