John L. Connet, 25, student, attempted to save Edward W. Barnes, 25, student, from drowning, Mahopac Falls, New York, July 25, 1937. While swimming in Lake Kirk, Barnes became distressed and bobbed up and down at a point 40 feet from the bank in water 12 feet deep. Diving from a float that was 40 feet farther from the bank, Connet swam to Barnes, took hold of his trunks, and raised him so that his head was above the surface. Barnes then threw his arm around Connet's neck. and both were submerged. With one hand and then the other Connet tried to break the hold but could not; and twice he touched bottom, each time springing upward. Both lost consciousness. A young man who was a good swimmer then swam to them from a point near the bank; pulled Barnes, who still held to Connet, to the surface; struck him with his fist; and then swam and towed Barnes and Connet 25 feet to wadable water. Barnes and Connet were revived.
