Both Mary and her father (Jesse) worked for the B&O Railroad. Mary was a seamstress, who repaired the upholstery, curtains, etc. on the trains.

She made sundresses and sunhats (with BIG brims) out of patterned chicken feed bags for her nieces. And she made them their first pajama in the mid-1950s.

She enjoyed playing "rocking horse" with her niece, Debbie Rice (i.e. bouncing her on her ankle).
