He was a native of Sumter County, born at Lodebar to Dr. Henry Isaac Abbott & his wife, Elizabeth Anne Brown Barnett Smith (widow of Capt. Thomas John Smith). He and his wife (according to his obituary) adopted some orphans. The book, "Remberts by way of South Carolina", 1979, by by S. H. Rembert & L.A. McCall, indicates on page 393 that the Abbotts took in two children of her sister Martha Agnes Heriot Rembert (Sallie & Robert) when she died. And they took in Henry & Elizabeth when his sister, Theodora Abbott Hudson when she died.
He attended Charleston High School and graduated from Kings Mountain Military Institution 1856. At one time he was a member of the faculty of Kings Mountain Military Institute. He taught school and read medicine under his father & then graduated Columbia Dental College in 1860. At the outbreak of the War Between the States, he left the institute and joined the Army & served through Appomatox. I think that he was in the Ninth S. C. Volunteers. He was severely wounded at Antietam. After the war, he practiced dentistry, farmed, and invested money in lands in three counties. Dr. Abbott won election in 1890 to the S. C. Senate. He retired from his practice about 1899. Funeral services were at Rembert Church on Monday 6 Sept.
