Chesterfield – Miss Louisa Burnell Baker, 80, of South Street former long time teacher, died Tuesday in a Williamsburg nursing home.
Native of Chesterfield, she was graduated from Classical High School, Springfield in 1910, and Smith College in 1914. She received the master’s degree in education from Harvard University. She taught high school in Sheffield, Glenn Falls NY, Windsor Locks and Derby, Conn. She retired in 1956 from Derby High School where she taught English 30 years and was dean of girls.
She also coached numerous plays. Since retirement, she was active in the Chesterfield Congregational Church and was Sunday school superintendent nearly 10 years. She also was a member of Chesterfield Historical Society, Ladies Benevolent Society and Betty Allen Chapter, DAR of Northampton.
She leaves a sister, Mrs Emily H Bisbee of Chesterfield and a brother, William H Baker Jr. of Fort Pierce, Fla.
The funeral will be Thursday in the Congregational Church. Burial will be in Center Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Fund for Continuing Education of Chesterfield Congregational Church.
