In 1930 she and her parents and sister lived on a farm they owned in Granby Township, Newton County, MO. They did have a radio.

In 1940 she and her husband lived in a house they were renting in Stark City, MO. He worked as a miner, with an income in 1939 of $230 for 12 weeks of work.

Shirley J. Berner, 86, Neosho, died at 4:20 am, Friday, Dec. 22, 2006 at Freeman Neosho Hospital, following a 3 year illness. Mrs. Berner was born Jan. 21, 1920 in Newton Co., MO, the daughter of Alpha and Audrey Elmore. She was a lifelong area resident and worked in the fabric department of Wal-Mart for many years. Shirley was a member of the Rocketdyne Road Church of Christ, where she enjoyed quilting. Shirley married John Berner on Sept. 26, 1939 at Neosho and he survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Sharon Prater and husband, Ted, Diamond, MO; two grandchildren, Teddra Prater, Joplin and Michael Prater and wife, Nancy, Muncie, IN; three great grandchildren, Christopher Prater, Audrey Mae Prater and Mikel Anne Prater and a sister, Helen Prier, Newtonia, MO. She is preceded in death by a son, Johnny Lee Berner, a brother, Ivan Elmore and her parents.
