Mt. Vernon Log Mishap Kills Driver

John A. Gawith, 49, John Day logging truck driver, was killed about 4 p.m. Monday on Laycock creek road, near Mount Vernon, when he attempted to drop a loose log from his loaded truck.

Sheriff Robert Damon said the mishap apparently occurred when the loose log slipped from the binders and them him under the truck where he struck his head.

Gawith was hauling his first load of logs out of the Laycock creek area with a new truck. He is reported to have been en route to the Blue Mountain mills, hauling for Paul Langenfeldts.

A brother died in a similar accident near Mount Vernon in the summer of 1947.
