Joseph M. Kirk, Sr., was the grandfather of Roscoe Kirk.∼Joseph M Kirk was the son of John Kirk (1789-1860) and Clara Marcum Kirk (1803-?).

He served as a Captain in the 39th KY Regiment (Union) which fought in the Battle of Salyersville, the Battle of Saltville, & the Second Battle of Saltville.

His children with his wife, Nancy Jane Dingiss, were -

Alwilda A. Kirk b. c 1847, m. ---, Andy Spradlin.
Lafayette Kirk b. c 1849, d. before-1860.
John Lloyd Kirk b. July-1852.
Mary Jane "Polly" Kirk b. 07-April-1854.
William Ratcliff Kirk b. 04-Aug.1856.
