Son of William H and Bertha E Robinson Kelly. William Joseph Kelly married Clara Pearl Kain on 01 March 1920 at Sioux City, Iowa. She was born in Tennessee, coming, with her parents and siblings, to Nebraska as a young girl. She was the daughter of Charles Kain and Pearl Lockay.

William and Clara had a farm in Thurston county, Nebraska but came to Rock county, Nebraska in 1939 due to the drought. In Rock county they went into the dairy business. In 1947 they went to Sioux City, Iowa, but they returned to Rock county, Nebraska in 1952. They were parents of Gerald, Donald and Pauline Ruth (Mrs. Lyle Davis).
