HENRY WILLIAM SCHAMEL, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Sharpsburg, was born in Keedysville District, May 28, 1825, son of William Henry and Elizabeth (Poffenberger) Schamel.

William Henry Schamel came to the United States from Wurtemberg, Germany. He had been married in his native country, and had one son, but his wife died there, and his son married, and remained in Germany; so Mr. Schamel landed alone in this country, about the year 1807. He came directly to Maryland, and plied his trade, that of shoemaker, and taught school in English and German, at his home near Keedysville, during the rest of his life. Here he married Miss Elizabeth Poffenberger, who survived him for many years. They had eleven children: 1. Solomon, who died while a young man; 2. Susan, who married Jacob Boyer, and removed to Illinois; 3.Peter, who died near St. James, Washington County, leaving a son, George S. Schamel; 4. Catherine, who married Samuel Poffenberger, and removed to Illinois, where she died; 5. Elizabeth, who married Henry Mullen, lived many years in Sharpsburg, and then removed to the vicinity of Hagerstown, where she died; 6. Mary Ann, who married William Reed, died in Washington County, near Dam No. 4; 7. Benjamin, who married Maria Weller, and removed to Illinois; 8. Henry William; 9. John, a stone mason, married Miss Mahala Noris, died in Keedysville District; 10. Jacob, who married, first Miss Souders, second, Miss Poffenberger, and afterwards Miss _______, who survives him, and resides in Ohio, he died in Williamsport, Md.; 11. Josiah, who married Elizabeth Myers, and removed to Illinois, where he is now married to a second wife.

Henry William Schamel attended the winter schools of his neighborhood, during their sessions of about six weeks. From boyhood, he worked among the farmers and their families, helping the farmers’ wives while he was still a child, and afterwards, when large and strong enough, being employed in ploughing, etc. At the age of nineteen, he learned shoe-making, in which he has been engaged up to the present time. In 1845, he became a resident of Sharpsburg, where he finished learning his trade with Mr. Zimmerman.

Henry William Schamel was married, in 1847, to Amanda Helen, daughter of John and Rebecca Stevenson Zimmerman; she died June 18,1879, and is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery, at Sharpsburg. She was a member of the Dunkard Church, as is also Mr. Schamel. Their son, John F. Schamel, was born in Sharpsburg, December 27, 1847, he was educated in the public schools, and began business life as a clerk in the store of Mr. Hebb; he afterwards occupied a similar position with Josiah Kuhn. In 1869, he engaged in mercantile business on his own account, and has carried it on ever since. Like his father, he adheres to the Democratic party. John F. Schamel was married, December 21, 1871, to Julia, daughter of James and Amelia (Neff) Marker. Their children are: Frank, s. graduate of the School of Medicine, of Maryland University, is practicing at Brunswick, Md., married Rosella Moore; Helen, who married William H. Clipp, traveling salesman, of Hagerstown; J. Tilden, a draftsman and machinist of Sharpsburg, who married Elizabeth Wilson; Leah M., who resides at home when not engaged in the millinery business; Elta; and Mary; the last two at home.
