James Richard Bourne, age 69, died Saturday following a lengthy illness. He was born in New York and returned to Statesboro in 2005.

Mr. Bourne's father managed farms in New York and Florida for an owner in New York. During the 1940's the family lived six months a year in each state. In the 1950's Jim's father bought a farm near the Everglades and the family settled first in Boca Raton, then in Deerfield Beach, FL. Jim graduated from Pompano Beach High School in 1965.
At that time, Jim's parents, Glenn and Vera Bourne, decided to move to Statesboro, GA, to semi-retire.

Jim felt a call to the ministry which led to his graduation from Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN. He was married to Marla Burns Bourne in May 1969. His education continued at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, graduating with a Master in Church Music with a Youth and Family emphasis. Their son, Jay was born while they lived in Louisville. Jim served as a Minister of Music and Youth first at Shirley Hills Baptist Church in Warner Robins, GA, then at First Baptist Church in Douglas, GA. He also was a member of the Sons of Jubal and the author of several religious publications including VBS materials for the Southern Baptist Convention.

In 1989, Jim felt a need to change his focus of ministry to counseling. He began with a Master of Sociology from Valdosta State University in 1992. He also received a Post-Master Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Valdosta in 1994. He was certified in many areas of therapy including post traumatic stress disorder .Memberships were held in AAMFT, the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and in AACC, American Association of Christian Counselors. During this time Jim was an adjunct professor at South Georgia College and Valdosta State University.

After retirement in 2005, Jim and his wife moved back to Statesboro, GA to be with his mother. Over the years he had some chronic medical difficulties. For the last 2 years he had a combination of medical problems. The family is especially grateful for the support of the First Baptist Church Nursing Ministry and to Gentiva Home Health Care’s Therapists and nurses for their quality of care.

Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marla Burns Bourne; a son, Jarrett (Jay) Glenn Bourne, his wife, Beth Ann McGinley Bourne and two grandchildren, Ethan James and Katherine Eleanor Bourne of Corbin KY. He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Sharon Bourne Brooks and A. DeWayne Brooks of Clemson, SC. He is predeceased by his parents, Glenn Harold Bourne and Vera Brown Bourne.
