Paul was the son of Fred Tribbey and Bertha Zehner, who married a week before Christmas on 18 Dec 1901. According to birth certificate notations, the couple had five children together—Paul (21 Sep 1902 – 21 Apr 1987), David Thomas (30 Jan 1904 – 28 Jul 1914), Ruth V. (26 Sep 1907 – 25 Aug 1959), (dau) Frances (14 Sep 1914 – 19 May 1961), and Edna Marie (11 Mar 1919 – 21 Jan 1979).

In 1902, Paul’s father Fred Tribbey was chosen as a Center Township Delegate from Precinct No. 5 to the republican county convention.

In 1906, Paul’s younger brother David fell quite ill. (From: The Weekly Republican, Plymouth, IN – Thu 9 Aug 1906 pg. 8) “The little child of Fred Tribbey that had been seriously ill with dysentery, is now convalescent at its home near Wolf Creek.”

The 1910 Census placed the family in Green Township (Argos area), Marshall Co., Indiana. Fred Tribbey, aged 31, was noted as a farmer. Bertha, aged 25, reported that she had had three children. Those three were there with their parents—Paul, aged 7, David (noted as Thomas David), aged 6, and 2-year-old Ruth.

A year after that census, Fred Tribbey sold off quite a few of his holdings in a public sale that took place on Wednesday 15 Mar 1911. Among the items up for sale were “Two horses, one a mare with foal, two cows fresh this spring, two heifers, about two dozen chickens, a Superior disc grain drill, a Deering Mower, a Brown riding cultivator, a spring-tooth harrow, a spike-tooth harrow, a wood saw and belt, a clover seed buncher, a breaking plow, a single buggy set, lumber for one hay rack, 2 iron kettles, a pair of bob sleds, a wagon box, and many smaller farm tools usually needed by all farmers.”

In April of 1914, the family shared an Easter dinner at the home of Paul’s maternal grandparents, David and Mary Zehner. Just three months later, the family lost 10-year-old son and brother David on 28 Jul 1914, claimed by tuberculosis.

By the 1920 Census, the family had relocated to Polk Township, Marshall County. Fred, aged 40, was working a new farm. Bertha, aged 36, was busy tending to the upkeep of a home that by that census year included four children—Paul, aged 17, Ruth, aged 12, Frances, aged 5, and 11-month-old Edna.

When the 1930 Census came around, the family was still living in Polk Township. Fred Tribbey, aged 51, was working for a gravel pit. Bertha, aged 46, was keeping house. Still at home with their parents were daughters Frances, aged 15, and Edna, aged 11. Son Paul had married Mildred Winifred Dutcher, and daughter Ruth had married Lester L. Goheen. In the decade following that census, their nest emptied out, Frances marrying Oscar Shively, and Edna wedding Joseph Bagley.

Paul and Mildred married circa 1923. Paul was about 20, Mildred about 15. They would be kept busy over the years raising twelve children together—Paul William (18 May 1924 – 29 May 2013), Donnabelle Erdeen (19 Dec 1925 – living as of 2018), Betty June (9 Jun 1927 – 3 Jan 2010), James Dennis (8 Oct 1928 – 14 Nov 2013), Russell Donald (1 Apr 1930 – 23 Feb 2006), Robert Leon (30 Oct 1931 – living as of 2018), Norma Lee (30 Mar 1933 – 16 Aug 1998), Kenneth Gordon (7 Oct 1934 – 2 Mar 1978), Virginia Ann (26 Jun 1936 – 24 Feb 1990), Lawrence Eugene (13 Jun 1938 – living as of 2018), Clarence Duane (25 Aug 1939 – living as of 2018), and Joyce Fern (27 May 1942 – unknown).

The 1930 Census placed the family in Polk Township in Marshall Co., Indiana. Paul Tribbey, aged 27, was working as a section hand for the railroad. Mildred, aged 22, was home with their four young children—Paul Jr., aged 5, Donnabelle, aged 4, Betty, aged 2, and 1-year-old James.

When the 1940 Census came around, the family was living in Green Township in Marshall County. Paul Tribbey, aged 37, was wrecking cars for a wrecking company. Fun! Mildred, aged 32, was crazy busy at home tending to the needs of a household that included eleven children—Paul Jr., aged 15, Donnabelle, aged 14, Betty, aged 12, James, aged 11, Russell, aged 10, Robert, aged 8, Norma, aged 7, Kenneth, aged 5, Virginia, aged 3, Lawrence, age 1, and 7-month-old Clarence.

The census records run out here. In 2022, the 1950 Census will add another decade of events to the Tribbey’s story. The family lived near Argos, and lucky for researchers, the local paper, the Argos Reflector, featured news items about the family that run through the forties.

(From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 31 Jul 1941 pg. 2) “Tribbey-Keyser Wedding Saturday. Rev. C.W.H. Sauerwein performed the single ring ceremony Saturday which united Miss Donnabelle Tribbey and Charles Keyser in marriage. The ceremony took place in the Evangelical Reformed parsonage. Miss Tribbey is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tribbey northwest of Argos, and Mr. Keyser is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Keyser of Plymouth. They were attended by the bride’s mother. Mr. and Mrs. Keyser will reside in Plymouth. Mr. Keyser is employed on the new Studebaker plant at South Bend.” (From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 14 Aug 1941 pg. 3) “Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tribbey entertained with a belling and shower Saturday evening for Mr. and Mrs. Charles Keyser. Mrs. Keyser was formerly Miss Donnabelle Tribbey. The young couple received some very nice presents after which ice cream and cookies were served…” (a long list of guests followed).

(From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 22 Jan 1942 pg. 8) “The Gilead Junior Epworth League met Friday evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tribbey with an attendance of seventeen members and nine visitors…Mrs. Tribbey served lovely refreshments. The next meeting will be held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wallace in February and will be a Valentine party.”

(From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 25 Mar 1943 pg. 1) “SERVICE NOTES. Pvt. Paul W. Tribbey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tribbey, Rt. 2, Argos, is now located at Fort McClennan, Ala.”

(From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 4 Jun 1942 pg. 1) “KELLY HOSPITAL NOTES. Mrs. Paul Tribbey and infant daughter, Joyce Fern, were dismissed Thursday.”

(From: The Argos Reflector, Argos, IN – Thu 25 Jan 1945 pg. 3) “Mr. and Mrs. Paul Tribbey and daughter Joyce and son, Duane of near Plymouth enjoyed Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. Don Zink and sons.”

On 18 Dec 1951, Paul’s parents Fred and Bertha Tribbey celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with an open house in their home for relatives and friends from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16. Four years later, death finally parted them, claiming Fred on 26 Apr 1955 at age 76. Bertha lived another eighteen years without her helpmate and companion, passing into the light on 3 Feb 1973 at age 89.

Paul lived to age 84, departing this earth on 21 Apr 1987. Mildred lived another nine years without him, not crossing over until 5 May 1996 at age 84.
