Norman was born March 5, 1936, in Conroe, Texas, and passed on October 6, 2016 in Groesbeck, Texas. He graduated from Galena Park High School in 1955, where he was a prodigious student athlete who excelled in football, basketball, track and baseball. After high school, Norman earned an athletic scholarship from the University of Houston where he performed on a Cougar football team that won a conference title. Norman’s life experience exemplified many of life’s greatest lessons. Norman was an avid hunter throughout his life and enjoyed sharing this experience with his family. He also shared his athletic expertise with his children and grandchildren, including coaching youth sports. After working for 33 years at the Valero refinery in Houston, he retired to Normangee, Texas in 2001. Norman was a devoted family man who is survived by his wife of 59 years, Darla Laramore Giles, their two children, Norman Ray Giles Sr. and Angela Bernice Brenengen, Angela’s husband Timothy Brenengen and daughter Julie Brenengen, Norman’s six grandchildren, Norman Ray Giles Jr., Natasia Giles, Brandi Giles, Ciara West, An-Janet Smith and her husband Marcaus Smith, and Norman’s two great-grandchildren Breyin and Aaliyah Smith, as well as Norman’s special nephew Monty Patterson, sister Helen Horton and her husband Max Horton. Funeral services for Norman Giles are set for 2pm, Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the Madisonville Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 11 am until the time of service. Burial will follow at the Williams-Bethesda Cemetery. Madisonville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
