Growing up on a farm east of Lizton, Indiana, James Swain graduated from Lizton High School in 1914. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World War I and later graduated from Indiana University with bachelor's and master's degrees. He married Nancy Jane Florence Cox in Bloomington, Indiana on June 24, 1923. He later received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and, together with his wife, became a Methodist missionary to Peru, Costa Rica, Spain, France, England and Mexico. He later served as a Professor of Romance Language and Literature at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. James and Nancy were the parents of two sons: James Maurice and Juan Robert.
