Frances Mildred Ray was born on January 24, 1908 to William "Hooky" Ray and Loro Edens Ray in Tyler, Texas. At age 2, her family moved to Marble Plains, a rural community south of Tullahoma, Tennessee. As a young girl, she attended Marble Plains elementary school. As a teen, she lived in Winchester, Tennessee with her grandmother while attending high school there and living with her parents on the weekend. She attended Murfreesboro Normal School later called Middle Tennessee State University for two years before transferring to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for her junior and senior years. In Knoxville, she met a fellow student named Sam Hinton witch she knew she would marry from the very first time they met. Frances graduated from U. of Tennessee with a degree in education in 1928. Later that year, she got married to Samuel on December 24th in her home at Marble Plains.
Frances and Samuel lived in Knoxville for the rest of their lives. She had three children, two daughters Lora Jean & Nancy and a son Ray. Frances was a faithful member of Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville for 58 years. She loved being involved in many activities with Church Street United Methodist Women, the American Association of University Women, Lakewood Home Extension and U.T. Faculty Women’s Club. She also was a member of the Knoxville Inner City Christian Churches and served as a board member of Wesley House. Her hobbies include gardening and playing bridge. Frances passed away at her home on June 27th, 1988 with her family around her.
