Maryanne Blount Young, 98, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016 in Pensacola, FL.

She was a loving wife and mother. A native of Pensacola, she was born on June 21, 1918 to Alexander Clement Blount, III and Mary Ida Saunders Blount. After graduating from Newton High School in Boston, MA she enrolled in Duke University. She majored in pre-med studies and earned a B.S. degree in 1940. Shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed, she met Robert (Bob) James Young, a young Naval officer. They were married on November 6, 1942 in San Francisco, CA and celebrated 66 years of marriage until his death in 2009.

After the war, she briefly co-owned the Mary Young Candy Co. She became the consummate foreign-service officer partner when Bob joined the Agency for International Development at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. She lived in Guatemala, Paraguay, Brazil and El Salvador and traveled extensively to other Latin American nations. She learned Spanish and Portuguese to be able to shop and manage her household overseas. She was a gracious hostess, expert event planner and an amazing cook, impressing diplomats and locals alike with her ability to entertain and socialize. Bob attributed a large measure of his career success to these abilities. Living in foreign countries she was often faced with poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water yet she kept her family healthy and well in spite of this.

In 1974 she and Bob retired to Pensacola. Earlier in retirement, Maryanne was active with the Pensacola Historic District, volunteering as a docent at the Clara Barkley Dorr House, her paternal great grandmother’s home. She was also an active volunteer with The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Florida, The Haven of our Lady of Peace and Christ Church Prayer Shawl Ministry. She belonged to numerous clubs, including the Welackas and the Azalea Garden Club. She was a brilliant bridge player.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Kempson and Garnier Minnich.

She is survived by her son, Robert, Jr. (Suzanne) and daughters, Kathy Ruiz (Tony) and Mary Ellen Haug (Ken); grandchildren, Eric Pinsky (Heidianne), Douglas Young (Carie), Andrew Young (Kristin), Charles Young, Timothy Haug and Lianne Haug; sister, Alexa McGrath (Charles); niece, Barbara Martin (Ron) and four great-granddaughters.

The family wishes to thank Granny Nannies caregivers, Eleanor, Minnie, Lennie, Gretchen, Chris, Yolanda, Jennifer, Barbara and Candace; and Cynthia, her housekeeper, for their loving care and support.

At her request, there will be no services.
