AN OLD SETTLER GONE—Death of Matthew Bigwood, a Survivor of the Scene of Napoleon's Surrender.—Matthew Bigwood, an old settler of Galena, died at his residence on West street, March 14th, aged 90 years and 8 months. Deceased was a native of Wiltshire, England, and in his youth served in the British marines. He was present, on board the ship Bellerophon, when Napoleon surrendered to Captain Maitland, after Waterloo. He was, perhaps, the only living man in this section who had seen the First Napoleon. Deceased emigrated to this country while yet a young man, and settled in Indiana, subsequently coming to Galena. For thirty years he had been a resident of this locality, following the occupation of farmer until the infirmities of age necessitated his retirement, some years ago, when he sold his farm and purchased a home on the hill, where he continued to reside up until the time of his death. His wife, who survives him, is a sister of H. H. Chandler and Mrs. J. G. Baker, of this city. She is at present quite sick with pneumonia. The funeral of Mr. Bigwood took place from the family residence on West Street at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. David Clark, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, and the remains were interred in Greenwood Cemetery. [Galena Gazette., 21st March 1889.]
