J. H. Doolittle Dies at Home of Daughter
James Hiram Doolittle, aged 86, former town marshal and later chief of police of Mishawaka, who has made his home in Osceola, this county, since the death of his wife, died at 4:45 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James Mason, Osceola, with whom he made his home. He had been in failing health for five months. He was born June 17, 1848, in this county and passed his lifetime in this vicinity. On April 7, 1867, he was married in Elkhart, Ind., to Miss Laura Almira Teel, who died six years ago.
Mr. Doolittle was for several years associated witht the city administration. He was elected marshall in 1878 and in 1902 was appointed chief of police, in which capacity he served four years. He was at one time engaged in the implement and coal business.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James Mason, of Osecola, and Mrs. Harriet E. Huff, of Miami, Fla., and three sons, Clyde, of Mishawaka; Raymond, of Detroit, Mich., and Fred Doolittle, of Cleveland, O. He leaves also 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Mrs. Carrie Martin, for twenty years bookkeeper of The South Bend Tribune.
The body may be viewed in the home of Mrs. Mason, and funeral arrangements are incomplete.

PALLBEARERS ARE NAMED FOR DOOLITTLE RITES
Pallbearers have been named for James Hiram Doolittle, aged 86, former Mishawaka chief of police, who died Tuesday afternoon in the home of his daugher, Mrs. James Mason, of Osceola, this county. They are Wilbur Crull, Ivan Crull, Otis Bullock, John Kirkpatrick, Thomas Balyeat and Clarence Richards.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon in the residence, with Rev. A. Vernon and Rev. J. Maynard, of the Osceola Methodist Episcopal church, officiating. Burial will be in the city cemetery.
Survivors of Mr. Doolittle include two daughters, Mrs. Mason, in whose home he died, and Mrs. Harriet E. Huff, of Miami, Fla., and three sons, Clyde, of Mishawaka; Raymond, of Detroit, Mich., and Fred, of Cleveland, O. He leaves also 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
