Janette Coffing was born on 11 Sep 1806, in Salisbury, Litchfield, Connecticut, to John Churchill and Jerusha (Fitch) Coffing. Janette was the couple's first born. Later born full siblings included Clarissa (b. 1808), John H. (b. & d. 1811), and Charles F. (b. 1812). Jerusha (Fitch) Coffing died in 1812, shortly after the birth of her youngest child. John Churchill Coffing married for the second time to Maria Birch. Together they were the parents of Marcia (b. 1817).

Janette married Curtis Randolph Cable. They were the parents of Florence, who married Horace J. Canfield. Curtis died in 1846 and Janette in 1892. Janette and Curtis Cable, and Florence and Horace Canfield, were all buried in Salisbury Cemetery, which became active in the 19th century as older town burying grounds came into disuse.

A family cenotaph, depicting an urn with the inscription "in memoriam," rests near her parents' graves at Center Cemetery (aka The Old Burying Ground or Town Hall Cemetery) behind the Salisbury Town Hall on Main Street. The similarity of the name "Town Hall Cemetery," as that cemetery is described in the Hale Collection, with "Town Hill Cemetery," located on the grounds of the Hotchkiss School, has led to some confusion and misidentification amongst contributors not familiar with Salisbury cemeteries.
