Emalyn attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. During World War II, she served in the American Red Cross.
Emalyn was active in and held leadership positions in several societies, including the Alabama Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Pen Women and the National Society of Arts and Letters. Her mother, Rosamon Henderson was the founder of the Birmingham chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters.
Emalyn was an active member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church where she taught women's bible studies. She served her denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), in many capacities, in particular by writing four ladies devotional study books that have been widely used in the PCA and beyond.
Emalyn possessed a gracious, loving spirit and her and John's home was always open to friends, guests and visiting missionaries. She was faithful to pray for her family and those who had needs.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 23,outside the chapel at Briarwood Presbyterian Church at 1:00 pm. A memorial service will follow in the chapel at 2:00. The service will be conducted by Dr. Harry L. Reeder, Dr. Frank M Barker, Jr., with Dr. Mark Cushman officiating. A graveside service will follow at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
