James E. Dodge, 87, dies; resident of Rochester

James E. Dodge, 87, lifelong Olmsted County resident and retired farmer, died Sunday of complications from a stroke at Rochester Health Care Center where he had lived the past year.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Vine Funeral Home.

Rites for James E. Dodge are scheduled Thursday

The funeral for James E. Dodge is 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Evangel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert C. Painter officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Dodge, 87, an Olmsted County native and retired farmer, died Sunday at Rochester Health Care Center.

He was born Oct. 31, 1897, in Haverhill Township, Olmsted County, and served in the Army after attending Rochester High School. He then attended Rochester Junior College and was employed in Olmsted County as a farmhand and by the telephone company. On Jan. 15, 1932, he married Agnes Morris in Rochester, and worked on his father-in-law's farm until the couple moved to San Diego in 1941. Mr. Dodge was employed there as an aircraft mechanic until 1943, and employed in St. Paul by Northwest Airlines until the couple purchased a farm in Haverhill Township in 1946. They lived there until entering the Rochester Health Care Center a year ago.

Mr. Dodge was Cascade Town Board supervisor from 1955 until 1975, and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Stanley of Rochester; two daughters, Mrs. Joan West of Rochester and Mrs. Betty Hofschulte of Silver Bay, Minn.; nine grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Friends may call at Vine Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and until noon Thursday, then at the church one hour prior to services.
