Walter served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade, U.S.S. Lagarto (SS-371), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in Hartford County, Connecticut prior to the war.
The U.S.S. Lagarto was sunk by the Japanese minelayer Hatsutaka in the Gulf of Siam during the war.
Walter was declared "Missing In Action" in the Largarto's sinking.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Service # O-187815
The Lagarto lost all 88 crew members in this sinking and received one battle star for World War II service.
The U.S.S. Lagarto was found sitting upright at the bottom of the Southern Gulf of Siam, South China Sea in 2005 by a Navy crew and was in almost perfect condition. A book has been written on it's fate.
