Son of Emanuel Branch and Louiza/Louisa Carter, daughter of Cox Carter and Candis Matthews. Emanuel Branch was the son of Williams Branch and Elizabeth "Betsy" of Robeson County. Louisa died prior to 1860 census and William McN "Mack" and his sister Candace Branch were living with their maternal grandmother in Summerville area of Harnett County. In 1875, he married Virginia Ruth Vann of Fayetteville, Cumberland County.
