BECKNER. — Mary Emma Brown Beckner was born at Waketon, Tex., on June 5, 1878, and died at Bolton, Mass., on Feb. 6, 1957.

Until the age of seventeen she attended school in a small, one-room schoolhouse. Afterward she attended high school in Denton, Tex., and later Keene Academy at Keene, Tex. At about the age of twenty she and her mother attended some tent meetings. Both were converted, baptized at the same time, and joined the Seventh-day Adventist church.

At Keene Academy she prepared for church school teaching and later taught at New Hope, Tex. In those days very few Adventist textbooks had been written. She remembered that three textbooks used in her church school were the Bible, Early Writings, and The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan. It was at Keene Academy that she made the acquaintance of George Thornton Beckner. They were married on May 29, 1901, and soon afterward went as missionaries to the South Sea Islands, sailing on the Mariposa in company with B. J. Cady, G. F. Jones, Anna Nelson, Luke Roth and family, thirteen in all, to Tahita and Raiatea.

After seven years of labor on the islands, Sister Beckner's health showed signs of breaking. They, therefore, returned to America and came to South Lancaster to live, just fifty years ago. With the exception of a few years in Athol they have lived in or near South Lancaster through this half century.

While living in Athol they helped to start the first church school there, and when they returned to Lancaster it was to provide a Christian education for their four children: Erlow C. and Royce 0. Beckner, both born on Raiatea of the Society Islands; Anna Mary, born at Petersham; and Leota, born at Athol, Mass.

Sister Beckner was one of the charter members of the South Lancaster Dorcas Society, serving much of the time as assistant leader. She loved Dorcas work and seldom missed attending. Brother and Sister Beckner helped many young people to gain a Christian education here by providing them a home. Some of these are now in conference work, some in the home field and some in foreign lands.

Sister Beckner's health failed seriously in 1950. For more than four years she had been confined to her bed, and had been cared for tenderly by her husband and by Sister Curit. She is survived by her brother and sisters — Charles Brown of Lake Parsippany, N.J., Mrs. Edna Russell of Denton, Tex., Mrs. Ann Laurence of Denton, Tex., Mrs. Linnie Richards of Redlands, Calif., Mrs. Ruby MacLennon of Waco, Tex.; and her four children — Erlow C. Beckner of Arlington, Calif., Royce 0. Beckner of McMinnville. Tenn., Anna Mary Farnsworth of Denver Colo., and Leota H. Fish of Berlin, Mass. Added to these are fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Our sister rests in Eastwood Cemetery by the side of her companion of fifty-five years, from whom she was divided by only fifty days. The funeral service was conducted by Elder R. K. Krick, the pastor, assisted by Elder T. R. Gardner and the writer. (written by) CLIFTON L. TAYLOR
