Opal Charlene Nelson, 86, passed away at 3:24 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2016 at her home.

Born Jan. 26, 1930 in Arkansas, she was a daughter of Charles and Anna Heard.

A homemaker, she was an active member of Gracepoint Church since 1974. She loved going to Six Flags, playing Uno Attack, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include 9 children, Noah Thomas of Brooklyn, Vernon Nelson and Pam Misturak, both of Granite City, Donna Nelson of Rolla, Mo., Linda (Mark) Trawick of Salem, Mo., Mary Folk of Haines City, Fla., Lisa Baker of Summer, Ill., Rickey Nelson and Mikey Valencia, both of Granite City; 26 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Olna May Wilbert of Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four children, Sharon Gail Nelson, Stevie Nelson, Larry Nelson, and Mary May Markus Nelson; a grandson, Abraham Thomas; a brother, Bill Heard; and sisters Lois Meeker and Pauleen Chapel.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 at Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory. Pastor T.L. Smith will officiate services at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 at Gracepoint Church, 2450 Pontoon Road, Granite City. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.
