Herbert at age 10 came from Sutton, Quebec to Madison, Lake County, Dakota Territory (SD) with his mother and sister in 1880. He was either born in Abbott's Corner, Brome-Mississiquoi Quebec or 'Moffatt's Corner' Richford, VT, a mile apart from each other. He made his way to Pitt, Lake of the Woods, MN, Baudette, and eventually Hibbing. He did a variety of jobs in the lumber industry. He was a forest surveyor for a logging company, head foreman at at Backus & Brooks Lumberyard in Pitt, MN in 1910, and drove logs down the Rainy River to the lumber mills. He loved spending time in the woods.
