"About 45 years ago Jacob and Andrew Arendt (brothers) came to this part of Allegany county (MD) but prior to then of Adams county Pennsylvania...

Andrew by two years the junior of the other brother, comes next in order. How ready is the pen to do justice to this amiable, good, useful, and Christian man but it is not so able as willing. He came among the now passed generation, so to speak, about the same time as his brother. For some years he drove one of those great six-horse teams on the National Road. His health failing, he quit this wasting occupation, and became connected with his brother's business for some years. For a time constable, then justice of the Peace, and lastly a School Commissioner for Garret County. At one time the proprietor of a nursery in this town. In all his official relations as well as private, he was honest, just, and fair.

He wore a naturally frail constitution with consequent delicate health, which he taxed with more than allowable burthens. In 1874, in his 57th year, he died abruptly of paralysis. The last fiber's of life's complicated machinery had worn away. This died a true practical christian, an unswerving, friend, good citizen, devoted husband, and a kind, judicious parent. This whole community received a shock and a severe loss at the same moment. No one was more penetrated than him who now undertakes to offer the truthful tribute, and, that too, in the realities of friendship and gratitude.

He married Jane Schultz, daughter of Adam Shultz. She still survives as his widow and lives in St. Louis. Four children came from this marriage. William Hampton is well and prosperously situated in that city. Clara is the wife of our respected fellow citizen, C. J. Otto, a farmer and lumber manufacturer by occupation. Here is another example of a potent and respected name becoming extinct in our midst. We hear now the once familiar name "Arendt" only as of those who are gone."
