Alfred has 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren (one deceased); and one great great-grandchild. Alfred is survived by one sister, Evelyn Allen of Amherst and a host of nieces and nephews. Alfred was predeceased by his parents, Bascom and Cora Coffey; brothers, Chambers, Lloyd, Cecil, and Lester; and one sister, Mildred Fisher. Alfred Coffey was born in Eagle Rock on February 17, 1916 and was a lifelong resident of the Buchanan and Eagle Rock area. Alfred began his career as an independent contractor in 1960 and proceeded to found his own company, A.R. Coffey & Sons, Inc., a road and bridge building company, on May 21, 1970. Alfred Coffey built many of the Commonwealth of Virginia bridges and highways as he served as President of the Company from May 1970 until March 1984. He retired from A. R. Coffey & Sons, Inc. on March 22, 1984. While a successful businessman, Alfred had a passion for farming. He enjoyed breeding and raising horses and cattle on his two farms just outside of Eagle Rock. Most of all, he enjoyed his many teams of mules. Alfred joined the Independent Order of Odd Fellows' Springwood Lodge No. 278 on October 5, 1962. He was elected in 1972 as Noble Grand for that year. This year, 2006, Alfred was granted lifelong membership of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows' Springwood Lodge. Alfred's commitment to his wife and family was of utmost importance to him. He and his wife, Mae, taught their ten children the importance of love, family, belief in God and the value of a good work ethic. Alfred often commented that it was up to them now, speaking of his and Mae's ten children, "we fed them, clothed them and raised them in the church."
Alfred was a member of Springwood Baptist Church for over 50 years and served in many positions such as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in honor of Alfred Coffey to the Eagle Rock Rescue Squad. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the Botetourt Funeral Home located at 14920 Lee Highway, Buchanan, Virginia.
