d. bet. 1881 when last known daughter born and 1900 when wife is listed as widow on 1900 census.
Joanna (Helen's mother) is suspected to be his 2nd wife. He remarried after Joanna's death to Mary R. Langham (m. #1 Stince, m. #2 McGee). John is suspected of marrying to a 1st wife named Sarah MNU in Washington County, Texas ca. 1858 (where he is noted on the TX Voter Registration in 1868).
I also suspect VERY HEAVILY that he is the brother of Samuel Alexander Simmons (my 3rd gr. grandfather) also born in Alabama abt. 1834 and both John and Samuel named their first daughters Nancy and Samuel named his first son John. They were also in the same areas throughout their lives. My family and I have several matches in Ancestry who descend from John H. Simmons and his daughter Helen Josephine.
