A Memorial Mass will be held for Luke "Doo" Hernandez at 9:30 AM on Friday, January 7, 2022 at St. Jules Catholic Church of Lafayette. Doo, as he was affectionately known, was 91 when he passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at home with his family.

Luke decided a long time ago that he would donate his body to science. Not only did he want to help doctors and save lives, but he always said, "That's my chance to go to college", so he chose LSU. Due to unforeseen circumstances, his wishes were not able to be granted.

Luke is survived by his two daughters, Jody McConnell and her husband, John and Cherie Hernandez Nelson; seven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren, Cory Hebert and his wife, Sandy and their two sons, Holden and Taylor; T.J. Hebert and his wife, Melanie and their daughter, Molly and three sons, Finn, Noah and Luke; Melissa Nelson Alleman and her two sons, Ayden and Avery and one daughter, Ana; Jenny Nelson and her husband, Karl Castille and their daughter, Myla; Katie McConnell and her wife, Leah Viator and their daughter, Lena; Ben McConnell, Renee Rodrigue and Michael McConnell.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Patsy Domingue Hernandez; his oldest daughter, Patty Luke Hernandez; his mother, Solange "Sue Sue" Guilbeau Hernandez; and his father, Avery "Shorty" Hernandez.

Luke was born at his family home in the community of Ossun, Louisiana. He attended schools in Rayne, in Scott and graduated from Lafayette Senior High School in 1948, where he met Patsy. He was a devout Catholic and also an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 3202.

He was an avid baseball and softball player until his mid 40's. He played short-stop for many teams and they all knew who to call if they ever needed a sub. When not playing ball, he loved fishing, hunting and bowling.

Luke enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948. He was then sent to Germany during the Berlin Airlift, where he served as an emergency medical assistant. He also had the opportunity to play baseball (short-stop) in France, Germany, Spain and other countries representing the United States Air Force and winning three European Championships.

Following his 4 years of service he returned home, married and was employed by Sun Oil Company for 35 years. Many stories of surveying in the swamps and marshes of south Louisiana were told, especially during "Happy Hour" that he, Patsy and friends didn't miss. He was a confidant to his family, co-workers, many friends and neighbors, always helping someone.
