Reverend Luther Henry Hastey

Luther Hastey was born in Abbeville, Alabama, on March 7, 1922 to Henry Albert and Johnnie Holley Hastey, and entered into rest on September 22, 2016. He was the brother of Mae, Albert, Frances, Lutie, Lillian, Helen, Edward, Jean, and Mary Alice. He moved to Seminole county when he was twelve years old and was a graduate of Seminole County High School and a veteran of World War II.

He married Martha Ann Goodwin on June 2, 1946, and both became active members of the First Baptist Church. Later, he was ordained as a Baptist minister, and he and Martha Ann served a number of churches in the area, in particular, many years at the Iron City Baptist Church. He worked in a number of vocations, including clerk of the court and probation officer for many years, in addition to the ministry. However, without question, his happiest days were as a pastor.

Together, he and Martha Ann raised two sons, and he relished the company of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoying many wonderful times with his relatives and friends. He also was often seen working in his yard and won “yard of the month” multiple times. To those who knew and loved him, he was like King David, not flawless, yet, “a man after God’s own heart.” He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann as well as his parents, his brother Albert, and sisters, Mae, Frances, Lutie, and Lillian. He is survived by sisters, Helen and David Doster of Donalsonville; Jean Hayes of Plano, TX; Mary Alice Bolton of Dawson, GA; brother, Edward Hastey and Nell of Ponte Vedra, FL; sons Joe and Carol Hastey of Amelia Island, FL and Dr. Charles Hastey of Montgomery, AL.

Also surviving are grandchildren Todd Hastey of Knoxville, TN; Scott and Janet Hastey of Atlanta, GA; Jonathan and Allison Hastey of Denver, CO; Chase Hastey and Lee Hastey Goodwyn and Will of Montgomery, AL; and Laura Hastey Benefield and Brandon of Tuscaloosa, AL. His great grandchildren are Sarah Kate Hastey of Knoxville, TN, Will, Ellie, and Ben Hastey of Atlanta, GA; and Bibb and Greeley Goodwyn of Montgomery, AL.

Funeral services for Rev. Hastey will be held on Monday, September, 26, 2016 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church Donalsonville with Rev. Jimmy Hornsby and Rev. Richard Trawick officiating. Interment will follow in Friendship Memorial Gardens with Todd Hastey. Scott Hastey, Jonathan Hastey, Chase Hastey, Lee Goodwyn, and Laura Benefield serving as casketbearers. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at 10:00 AM at the church.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Iron City Baptist Church PO Box 128 Iron City, GA 39859; First Baptist Church of Donalsonville PO Box 305 Donalsonville, GA 39845; or Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
