Richard Leo "Dick" Volz Obituary (McAllen Monitor)

Mission, Texas - Richard Leo "Dick" Volz, a long-time resident of Mission, passed away on August 27, 2016. He was born in Mission, Texas on February 15, 1930 to Alphons and Olivia Massey Volz.

The fourth child of five Volz siblings, Dick grew up in Mission and farmed citrus with his father. The Volz family were pioneer settlers of Mission, even giving Mission its name over 100 years ago.

Dick always had a deep appreciation of his family and farming background. He attended Mission High School and was a proud Eagle Scout. Many who knew him, remember him driving around Mission with his dog, Crazy, on the hood of his 1940 Ford Convertible. After his high school graduation, he went on to serve his country in the US Army. Stationed for active duty south of the 38th parallel during the Korean War, he was noted as an accomplished marksman.

Dick married his high school sweetheart, Fosteene Spikes, on April 30, 1953. They settled in Mission and had five children. In 1963 the family moved to Kensington, Maryland where Dick began a career in car sales. The family returned to Mission in 1971 when he was named co-owner and manager for Spikes Motor Company, where he worked until his retirement in 1988.

Dick was a gentleman with tremendous character and heart. He had a compassion for others, a man of integrity with a one-of-a-kind sense of humor and a generous spirit. His hobbies were farming, golfing, bowling, watching football, but most of all, enjoying great times with his family and friends.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents Alphons & Olivia Volz; wife Fosteene Volz; brother Marvin Volz; sister Millicent VanDeventer; daughter Teresa Sturdivant; and son David Volz.

He is survived by his children: Linda Vickers (Mike) of Falfurrias, Ron Volz of Mission, and Loretta Mann (Scott) of San Marcos; sisters: Sister Mary Florence, CDP and Marlene Vos of Weslaco; grandchildren Samantha Muske (Cody), Madelyne Mann, Sawyer Mann, and Brandon Mann; and his long-time dancing partner and companion, Lucy Tullbane.

Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home of Mission. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home of Mission. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission.

Pallbearers will be Bill Littleton, Mondo Gonzales, James Vos, Richard Vos, Sawyer Mann and Brandon Mann.

In memory of Dick, the family wishes that you "pass it forward". Do a good deed, extend a helping hand or just make someone smile. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the following animal shelters or your local animal shelter.
