Walter H. Wanner
Walter H. Wanner, 89, formerly of West Earl Township, died Friday February 18 at Mennonite Home, Lancaster, where he had lived since 2009.
Born in Akron, Pa., to the late Amos S. and Sarah (Heisey) Wanner, he graduated from West Earl High School and worked locally before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. After discharge, he worked in Washington, D.C., where he met and married Sarah (Aten), to whom he was married 60 years before her death in 2009. He retired from civil service in 1979. He also served 35 years in Air Force and Army Reserves. After retirement, he delivered Martin's pretzels to area supermarkets, was a West Earl Twp. supervisor, and was a school bus driver for Conestoga Valley.
A long-time member of Ebenezer E. C. Church, Brownstown, Walter formerly taught Sunday School and served as lay delegate to the Evangelical Congregational Conference. He served on the Christian Education Society and the board of Twin Pines Camp. He and Sarah were active for many years in Christian Endeavor on local, county and state levels. He was a Boy Scout leader in Troop 82. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, and word puzzles, and was an avid cyclist into his eighties.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Sam, and an infant sister.
