C. Howard Bower, 92, of 534 E. Eighth St., Berwick, a former engineer at AC&F Industries, died Saturday evening at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he had been a patient for one week. He had been a guest at Laporte United Methodist Home for 1 1/2 years. Born June 4, 1895, in Berwick, he was the son of the late Joseph and Cora Bower. His wife, the former Helen G. Sponenburg, died April 20, 1969; a daughter, Elaine K. Armstrong, died Feb. 1, 1986, and a brother, Frank Bower, died previously.

Mr. Bower was an engineer at AC&F Industries in Berwick, retiring in 1960. He was a veteran of World War I. A lifelong resident of Berwick, he was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Berwick, and served on the church board. He was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years. He was also a member of Berwick Senior Citizens, a life member of Berwick Elks Lodge and past member of Odd Fellows Lodge. Mr. Bower was salutorian of the Berwick High School Class of 1913. While in high school, he won a state track championship at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Surviving are his son, Loren J. "Bud" Bower of Montoursville, and two grandsons. Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from the Kelchner-Hindman Funeral Home, 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick, with the Rev. Russell D. Mengel, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Market Street, Berwick.
Husband of Helen G. Sponenburg and father of one daughter, Mrs. W. Richard (Elaine) Armstrong, Columbus, Ohio; one son, Loren Bower, Muncy; two grandsons.
He served as a Pvt in the US Army in WWI.
