John Howard Adams, 77, of Opelika, Alabama, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016.

He was born Jan. 7, 1939, in Chicago (Cook County), Illinois, to William Paul and Helen Koubek Adams.

He grew up in Three Rivers, Michigan, where he attended public schools for his primary education. He received his bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan, his master’s degree from the University of Alabama, and his PhD from the University of Denver. He retired from the English Department at Murray State University.

John was an amateur genealogist. He enjoyed communicating by e-mail with family, friends and others. His hobbies included woodworking and furniture-making, and he was an avid reader. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and scooters. He especially enjoyed entertaining his grandchildren.

Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Nancy Martin Adams; his children, Robinson Paul Adams and wife Julia Marie Adams of Moody, Alabama, and Leslie Adams Dove and husband Larry Joe Dove II of Atlanta, Georgia; his grandchildren, Mason Joseph Dove and Lauren Addison Dove; a brother, William Paul Adams Jr.-Zuzanek and two nieces.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, in Union Springs Perpetual Care Cemetery with Bill Cannon officiating.
