Israel married Almena (Almedia) Francis (AKA: Fannie) Donaghe on 24 April 1863. The certificate of marriage was recorded 23 May 1863, Polk Co., Missouri.

1870 U.S. Census shows Israel and Almena (Fannie) living in Greenwood, Sebastion Co., Arkansas. Israel's occupation was given as a school teacher. Almena's brother, George Washington Donaghe, was living with them.

Fort Smith, Arkansas, Criminal Case files, 1866 to 1900, has two matches for Isreal Burns. Apparently he was involved in bootlegging liquor. This offense also appears in several cases involving the Donaghe family during the same period.

Israel was a Sargent in Company M, 8 Mo Cavalry. He was in the same unit as his brothers, Proctor and Richard. Fought on the side of the Union in the Civil war.

Israel was a school teacher and 41 years old when he died. Israel died of consumption.
