Malvin was born in Marinette, WI in 1890, the third child of Olaf and Hansine (Anderson) Monsen. He came to Dunbar as a child with his parents and attended the Dunbar School. He joined the United States Army during World War I and served from 1917 to 1919. He served in France and received the Purple Heart while there.
When he returned, he farmed and in 1922 began the first rual mail route for Dunbar, retiring in 1957.
On September 25, 1925, he married Flossie Fern Helton.
