“WM. C. M’KEE DIES SUDDENLY HERE THURSDAY: Well Known Druggist and World War Veteran Succumbs // William Cloyd McKEE, president of McKee Drug company and well known Columbus citizen, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at the residence of his mother, Mrs. L. B. McKEE, 1413 Fourth avenue. // Mr. McKEE, who was a captain in the American Expeditionary Forces during the World war, had been in ill health for some time. However, he had shown improvement, and his death was unexpected. Mr. McKEE succumbed suddenly while conversing with his mother and sister, Mrs. Robert M. LEWIS, during his daily visit to his mother’s home. // Native of Alabama // Mr. McKEE was the son of Florence MAHONE McKEE and the late Lee Bourke McKEE who died last April. He was born in Troy, Ala., Dec. 18, 1895, but had been a resident of Columbus since 1897, his parents having moved back to Columbus, their home town, in that year. // After attending Columbus public schools and graduating from high school as president of the class of 1914, he matriculated at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, Ala., where he specialized in pharmacy. // While attending Auburn, he volunteered his services in the United States army and served as a captain in the Sixth division, remaining overseas for more than one year. // He was married to Margaret Bryan BULLOCK on November 2, 1921. To this union was born one daughter, Mary Frances McKEE. // In Drug Business // He entered the wholesale drug business in 1922 as president of the McKee Drug company, remaining at the head until his untimely death. // On his paternal side, Mr. McKEE is a direct descendant of the distinguished McKEE family of Philadelphia, and BRAINARD family of Connecticut. On his maternal side he is a direct descendant of Chief Justice MARSHALL and of Martin KEY, of England, who married a sister of Lady Jane GREY and came to this country among the first of the English colonists. Thus was found the family in this country from which the deceased traced his ancestry. In his mother’s line are the WIMBERLEY’s, MAHONEs, GARRARDs, MARSHALLs, of Virginia and Georgia. // Mr. McKEE was an active member of St. Paul Methodist church, having served as treasurer and steward for many years. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon national collegiate fraternity and was a Scottish Rite Mason. // Besides his wife and daughter, Mary Florence, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. L. B. McKEE, one sister, Mrs. Robert M. LEWIS, and nephew, Robert M. LEWIS, Jr. // Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3 o’clock at his late residence, 1402 Second avenue. Rev. Osgood F. COOK, pastor of St. Paul Methodist church, will conduct the services and interment will be in the family plat in Linwood cemetery. // Pallbearers will be: J. B. GILCHRIST, Macolm McKINNON, Dudley SPAIN, George MATHEWS, Palmer MULLIN and J. B. KEY. // Local wholesale and retail druggists will close their places of business during the hour of the funeral.” [Columbus (GA) Enquirer newspaper, Friday, 05 NOV 1937, pp. 1. & 15.]
