At a young age, he and his siblings - Donna Jean and George Robert - went to live with John Elmer Pierce (Memorial 125290736) and Jessie M. (Cordell) Pierce (Memorial 125290760) and may have been adopted by them as they were listed with the surname Pierce in their later records. He married Magdalena "Maggie" Freiwang on September 21, 1953 in Calgary, Canada.
