Wanda Elaine Jones
Wanda Elaine Jones was born on March 10, 1926, in Fresno, Calif., to Reed J. and Mildred E. Curtis. She passed away on Sept. 17, 2016, in Weiser, Idaho.
Wanda was the oldest of four girls. She attended schools in the Fresno area graduating from Fresno High School in 1943. She attended college at U.C. Berkeley and Fresno State.
In 1947, Wanda married a local rancher's son, Herbert "Dick" Jones. These two enjoyed a long married life together, 67 years, before Dick passed away in 2014.
Wanda and Dick had two children, Susan Kate and Herbert R. "Butch" Jones. Besides being a loving wife and mother, Wanda had two other driving forces in her life; her church and education.
She served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including a time as the Weiser Stake Relief Society President.
After graduating from college in 1947, Wanda went to work for the Fresno County Probation Department working with troubled youth. In 1954, she was hired by the Clovis School District as a teacher at the Dry Creek Elementary School. She taught for many years and also served in several administrative positions with the Clovis Unified School District until the late 1970s.
After "retiring," she was called to serve as superintendent of schools for Spring Valley School District in O'Neals, Calif., near her home.
Wanda "retired" again in 1982. Dick and Wanda sold their ranching operation near O'Neals in 1985 and along with their son, Butch and family moved to a new ranch near Canby, Calif.
Wanda was again called upon to serve as a long-term substitute teacher for the Modoc School District. In 1994, Dick and Wanda again moved ranching operations, this time to Washington County, Idaho.
Wanda was a substitute teacher in the Weiser schools until she was well into her 80's. Wanda had a unique ability to inspire young teachers, including four of her grandchildren who became teachers. She also had a special relationship with her daughter-in-law, Sue Jones. Wanda encouraged Sue to become a teacher and was always a mentor to her.
Wanda was a wonderful hostess and fantastic cook for all who entered her home. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved Nana Jones and her chocolate chip cookies!
Wherever Wanda went she immediately became involved in her church and local schools. She will be missed by many.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 67 years, "Dick."
She is survived by her two children, Susan Hendricks (Tom) and Butch (Sue); nine grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren (soon to be 34); and four great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her three sisters, Maureen, Pat, and Carol.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the LDS Stake Center. Burial service is at Hillcrest Cemetery in Weiser, Idaho.
