Thomas Edward Short
July 16, 1928 - September 12, 2016

Thomas Edward Short, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in the Texas Hill Country near Austin, Texas on Monday September 12th.

Tom's life was very exceptional. He grew up in South Texas, learning the oil business by helping his father operate leases and rough-necking as a teenager. He then joined the US Air Force / Army Air Corps where he proudly participated in the Berlin Air Lift

Upon his return to the USA, he attended the University of Texas where he graduated with a BS in Petroleum Engineering.

His worldwide work experiences as a Petroleum Engineer, began with four years in Bogota, Colombia, then seven years in Talara, Peru. From here he moved on to Melbourne and Sydney, Australia for five years. This was followed by four years in Algiers, Algeria, and two years in Tehran, Iran. Tom then moved back to Houston, Texas, where he founded Applied Drilling Technology as a pioneer in the turnkey, offshore drilling industry. This 14 year period was one of his proudest achievements. Even after "retirement" at age 65, he continued working in Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Brazil, Burma, Alaska, finally Mongolia. After his second retirement he started a new career as a home builder in the Texas Hill Country.

Tom Short is survived by his children, Tom (Vicky) Short Jr, of Queretaro, Mexico, Linda Susan Socha of Port Aransas, TX, and Judy (Robert) Kent of Austin, Texas; his grandchildren, Travis Short, Evan, Trevor, and Jenna Socha, and Chris Kent; and great-grandaugher Taylor Short.

He is predeceased by his wife Janet, his parents Arthur and Margaret Short, and his brothers and sisters, James, Carol-Ann, and Lee.

Tom had a tremendous love of life, living it to the fullest with interests in flying, airplanes, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, treasure hunting, boats, football, and reading,

He requested no services and will be cremated. A memorial open house may be arranged in the near future. Updates will become available on the website given below:
