Harriet Glascock Barrett, a daughter of William Hale Barrett and Susan [née Rhind] Barrett, was born in Augusta, Georgia on the 30th day of August 1868. Harriet's maternal great-grandfather, Thomas Glascock, was a general in the Colonial Army during the Revolutionary War.

In April 1887, Harriet married Clark Howell, a son of Evan Park Howell and the former Julia Adelaide Erwin from Atlanta. This union was blessed with the following know children:
Susan Barrett Howell (1890 – 1895)
Julia Erwin Howell (1891 – 1908)
Effie Park Howell (1892 – 1893)
Clark Howell Jr. (1894 – 1966)
Harriet Glascock (1896 - 1897)

Clark Howell was the editor-in-chief of The Atlanta Constitution, following the retirement of his father.
